1) JOSH COLLIER
#1. Gentle cleansing is the way to go. Avoid using overly aggressive physical scrubs and harsh detergent-based foaming cleansers. Both can aggravate acne and dehydrate the skin. Look for a mild gel cleanser that is free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), both of which are detergents that are actually fairly comedogenic when left on the skin and commonly used in cleansers designed for oily, acne-prone skin.
#2. Don’t just watch out for your facial care products — Shampoos, conditioners, styling products, toothpaste, and lip balms can contain heavy waxes, drying detergents, or certain oils that could be causing more breakouts around the hairline, forehead, or around the mouth.
#3. Make sure you’re properly removing all your makeup and sunscreen from the day. Neither should be left on overnight and most cleansers or makeup wipes won’t remove long-wear foundations and higher SPFs. I recommend using a mild cleanser on dry skin for 60 seconds, rinse with water, and then cleanse again for 60 seconds. The first cleanse breakdown these longer wearing products and the second actually cleanses the skin. If you’re going to put things on your skin that can handle the stress of your day, take your time to remove them.
#1. A couple times a week, keep acne causing bacteria from getting out of control by using a product with a natural anti-bacterial ingredient like tea tree oil.
#2. Check to ensure you’re not using skin care products that are contributing or causing your acne! These types of products include stripping ingredients like SLS or SLES, as well as pore clogging ingredients like petro-based ingredients and silicones (If you want to put your products to the test, use this cart!).
#3. Don’t just tackle external causes of acne – internal causes are almost always the cause of chronic, stubborn acne! Start your internal focus by making sure your digestive system is working as efficiently as possible (even if you have no signs of digestive issues!), boost your body’s natural ability to balance hormones with a clean detox-focused diet and herbal tea (that includes ingredients like burdock root, yellow dock root, milk thistle, and red clover blossom), and drink a big glass of water with lemon in it every morning (this helps with digestion and detoxifying the body).
#4. Don’t pass on moisturizing your skin! One of the biggest mistakes I see acne sufferers make is avoiding moisturizing and/or hydrating products in their daily routine. Skipping this crucial step just perpetuates the oil producing cycle and increases the amount of oil (sebum) your skin will produce.
#3. ELAINE MUMMERY
There is no ‘one way’ that can clear acne for all. Acne is similar to a rash. There are many types of rash and in turn many different reasons for the body producing a rash, so doctors treat in accordance to the type of rash that is appearing. Unfortunately due to a lack of research a theory was put together stating that there was only one reason for the body producing spots and hence all spots were linked under the heading ‘acne’. At the Elaine Mummery Acne Clinic, I treat acne similar to a rash as I am able to identify all types of spots thus I know where the problem lies.
Acne therefore needs to be treated on an individual basis.
Here are my 3 suggestions to help clear acne:
#1. A healthy diet is always the first stop, reducing sugar intake and including high fibre in the diet, teamed up with drinking cucumber juice and increasing water intake this can help to clear small pustules for some people, so that is always a good start.
#2. A healthy diet can often make very little difference to some clients because they have inherited mineral deficiencies, these deficiencies would show up early in childhood such as insomnia, motion sickness, ear and throat infections, tantrums, difficulty concentrating at school. A simple diet change is not enough for these clients and a hair test is required to create balance.
#3. Stresses can often trigger skin issues. Stress causes high levels of glucose to dump into the bloodstream and this can cause minor skin issues but stress can also affect the stomach causing gastritis (irritated stomach lining). This is often when acne sufferers blame all sorts of food for causing acne or blame acne on certain supplements. This happens because the stomach is damaged and an irritated stomach will cause spots.
4) PAM GARDNER COSGROVE
#1. Keep hands clean. While we don’t intentionally touch our face, it happens throughout the day. Our hands touch everything: doorknobs, handles, computers, etc. It is important to keep hands off acne areas to keep as clean as possible.
#2. Don’t squeeze. Squeezing pimples and acne actually makes it worse. Best to let it run its course. And, squeezing creates scarring that adds another dimension to deal with after the acne is under control.
#3. Follow a daily regimen. The best way to combat acne is to follow a daily regimen like Rodan + Fields Unblemish. Unblemish is a multi-med therapy that has the right medicines and is used in a distinct order to treat your acne and get it under control.
5) CLAUDIA AGUIRRE
While I don’t believe you can completely ‘avoid’ acne, as it has a genetic component, there are certainly some things you can do to prevent some flare-ups or minimize acne formation:
#1. Get a skin care regimen and stick to it! Avoid over drying, and use products with salicylic acid, sulfur and anti-inflammatory compounds like Oats and Chamomile.
#2. Clean up your diet: Hormone-laden dairy and foods high in the GI Index can also trigger or worsen acne. Subscribe to an anti-inflammatory diet, and boost up the zinc intake, as this may help with acne in some.
#3. Reduce stress: Can’t stress this enough. The condition of the mind and emotional state is directly reflected on the skin for many. Stress increases inflammation, which can trigger acne in sufferers. By calming the mind, you are better able to calm the skin.
6) SHEILA CALDERON, M.D
#1. When able avoid the acne triggers which include sun damage, lack of sleep, hormonal imbalance, stress, and products containing oil.
#2. Use the salicylic acid wash with a brush that you get from a medspa doctor daily in the shower to wash your face.
#3. After exercise, stress, or any activity use an acne toner from your medspa doctor.
7) KRIS D’AMOUR
I was fighting with acne myself for many years; I have 3 simple rules to follow:
#1. Choosing right products, which balance your natural sebum production, rather than over dry the complexion. I don’t recommend using moisturisers, rather oils and serums to moisturise instead, they don’t contain emulsifiers and thickeners, which are main ingredients in every moisturiser and are responsible for blocking the pores. Also choose every product carefully, use oils which are good for oily skin, avoid heavy oils like wheat germ or butters like cocoa butter, which clog the pores. Also make sure the products are full of natural antibacterial/antiseptic/anti-inflammatory ingredients, which reduce number of bacteria causing acne and the inflammation associated with bacteria grow. Unfortunately using completely oil free products doesn’t help; rather stimulate the skin to produce more sebum (natural oil produced by skin glands). Choose products which contain oils like: jojoba oil, grape seed oil, melon seed oil, apple seed oil, tamanu oil (anti-inflammatory properties), Sea buckthorn oil (anti-inflammatory/ anti-bacterial properties); which contain essential oils like: Petitgrain, Juniper berry, Tea Tree, Lavender, Patchouli (they balance natural oil production and act anti-bacterial, also calm inflammation).
#2. My second rule to follow is eating habits; unfortunately some people (like me) if eat a lot of processed food, drinking a lot of fizzy liquids and consume a lot of sweet products get more acne breakouts. The scientific explanation how this connection works doesn’t exist yet. Most of people who suffer from acne noticed that drinking a lot of water per day/ or some fresh unprocessed drink types plus eating some raw vegetables, salads, fruits can reduce breakouts and increase healing of existing ones.
#3. My third rule unfortunately involves some exercise in life. It doesn’t mean you have to start going to gym every day and became gym frick. Just try to walk more, even cleaning house more often can be a great exercise, you have to find some kinds of activities which involve movement and give you hopefully some satisfaction as well.
As a medical scientist I developed product which is very effective with managing acne prone skin. It is 100% natural and doesn’t contain any ingredients which would clog the pores. It is a perfect moisturising solution for the skin prone to acne balancing facial treatment.
I hope my input will help many people to manage the acne prone skin and make life a bit easier,
#1. Eat. It’s important to eat well – eating healthy shows on our face in the form of clear, healthy skin. Focus on foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, quality (organic and/or grass-fed, pasture-raised) meats and seafood, and healthy fats like avocado and coconut. Dairy, soy, white rice, and white bread are some of the biggest acne culprits. Avoid those foods for 2-4 weeks and evaluate how you look and feel.
#2. Sleep. Sleeping enough is very important for your entire body’s health, including your skin, because the body uses sleep to rejuvenate and heal. A full, restful night’s sleep will allow you to wake up looking fresh and beautiful. Go to sleep by 10 or 11 pm and sleep for a full 8 hours (more or less, depending on your natural sleep cycle).
#3. Relax. Stress often leads to breakouts in many people. Do yoga, breathing exercises, meditate, take a nice warm bath – whatever you enjoy doing to relax and be peaceful.
9) LAUREN ALLEN
#1. Avoid touching your face. Your hands are full of bacteria, dirt and oil which can cause your pores to clog. Although it may be tempting to pick or scratch your pimples, this will only make things work. Hands Off!
#2. Wash your face 2 to 3 times a day or after heavy perspiration. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubs, as they can irritate the skin. We recommend a gentle face cleanser like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.
#3. Drink water and get plenty of sleep. Two things those are essential to not only healthy skin, but a healthy body. Remember a healthy body will create healthy skin!
10) ILDI PEKAR
#1. Avoid Dairy/Soy/Nuts! The most common cause for breakouts is food or wrong products. When it comes to food, you should avoid dairy, if its hormonal, avoid soy/chocolate/nuts. When I tell my clients to cut soy/dairy/ out of their diet, their skin starts to see improvement with fewer breakouts.
#2. Do not overuse you acne products, they could stimulate your oil glands and produce more breakouts. I find it worth it to consult with a skin care specialist to discuss the right products.
#3. I recommend using honey; this prevents and kills bacteria in your skin. You can use this in any of my DIY mask I post on my social media. If you want a professional treatment, I recommend LED Light therapy Treatment helps kill the bacteria as well and heal the skin. The light penetrates the skin starting from the root and helps create a flawless look.
11) JOSHUA ZEICHNER, MD
#1. Think about your diet. Cow’s milk, especially skim milk has been shown to be associated acne flare ups. Sugary and starchy foods have a high glycemic index and may cause you to break out also.
#2. Avoid over-drying out your face. Less is more when it comes to pimples. Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide are just as effective at concentrations of 2.5% as they are at 10%!
#3. Don’t give up too quickly. it takes weeks for acne medications to start to work. There is no silver bullet that works overnight. Have patience and treat your entire face. You want to get rid of pimples you have and prevent new ones from popping up. Treat the whole face because we don’t know where the next zit will show up! If OTC acne medications are not help by 1 month, visit your dermatologist for a prescription.
12) TRACY RAFTL
#1. Switch away from chemical filled face washes, moisturizers and acne creams, which are extremely irritating to the skin. For most people they are actually making their acne far worse by using these instead of better! Use only gentle completely natural ingredients for your skin care (for example, raw honey is my favourite thing to wash my face with), and simplify your routine as much as possible. Also try washing your face less – only once a day, or even every few days.
#2. Stop popping pimples, squeezing your pores, and picking at your skin. This damages your skin, pushes bacteria deep into it, and creates inflammation. When you do this, you invite more acne to show up in the same area of your face in the future, and make your current skin situation look far, far worse. If you stop this one thing your skin will stop creating so much acne and look soooo much better. I use to have severe acne and when I stopped this one thing my skin made a huge leap forward to being clear.
#3. Avoid refined sugar and dairy, and eat lots of vegetables. Sugar and dairy are the top two foods that cause acne because they have strong effects on your hormones. On the flip side, eating healthful, real food that isn’t processed and full of chemicals will go a long way to getting rid of acne since it supports your skin to heal with the nutrients it needs.
13) BRITTANY JOHNSON RN, BSN
#1. Watch your diet and eat healthier. Good nutrition makes for good skin.
#2. Be careful to not touch your face during the day and sleep on your back. This will keep oils in your skin and on your pillow off of your face.
#3. And I strongly recommend using a good facial regimen. I recommend Rodan and Fields Unblemish.
14) SANA FELA
#1. Avoid Sugars and Milk
Sugars can be unhealthy on many levels. It takes a lot of work for our bodies to process excess sugar. Sugars can cause hormonal imbalances and an inflammatory response in the body which can cause acne production. Keep in mind that breads and pasta are high in carbs, and will cause the same bodily response as sugars, so it is important to count these items as sugar intake as well.
While milk is held as a nutritious drink for children, and is still a better choice than soda (!), milk can increase levels of two hormones which, at puberty, have already greatly increased. This excess can lead to acne. Milk has been found to be a cause of increased inflammation in the body as well, which leads to acne production.
This can be difficult when worried about acne, but it is so important. Be sure to get a good night’s rest, eat well, including fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of fresh water, relax and treat yourself well. Turn off the voice of your inner critic – it is likely that you are your own harshest critic. Recognize that, and tune it out! Exercise is an excellent stress reducer, and is good for you on many levels. Yoga is a wonderful way to healthily tone up and relax. Be good to yourself!
#3. Select the Right Products for Your Skin
There is no ‘one size fits all’ treatment for acne and oily skin. The first step is to identify the type of acne that you have, and the potential causes for oily skin. Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid are widely prescribed and are commonly found in over-the-counter topical treatments for both acne and oily skin, but they can be harsh on your skin, and could cause as much damage as good.
15) DR.RINKY KAPOOR
#1. Practice good skin care habits. Cleanse your skin thoroughly twice a day with a cleanser appropriate to your skin type. Never wear makeup to bed.
#2. Exercise regularly and follow a low glycemic diet. Avoid saturated fats, refined foods, aerated drinks and increase consumption of antioxidant rich natural foods. Your weight should be in tune with your height and age.
#3. Exfoliate once or twice a week with gentle scrubs. Clean ups once in 3 to 4 months are beneficial.
16) BRANDON DOYLE
#1. Drink plenty of water every day. Aim to drink at least two litres if possible. When the skin becomes dehydrated, dead skin cells are not effectively shed, which can lead to blocked pores and further acne.
#2. Reduce your Stress. Stress is one of the biggest causes of acne, especially acne after puberty. Meditation or mindful breathing can reduce the release of the stress hormone cortisol, and therefore reduce the severity of the acne.
Exercise — especially Yoga, is excellent at helping to de-stress the body and mind. Moderate exercise increases blood flow to the skin and helps to aid healing, as well as improve the health of your internal organs enabling them to get rid of waste more effectively.
#3. Change your pillowcase daily. Like anything else that transfers dirt and oil to your skin, pillowcases can be the cause of some types of acne. When your pillowcase isn’t laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of bacteria, dirt and oil is transferred right back to your skin. This can clog pores and cause acne.
17. LAURA COOKSEY
#1. Products that focus just on acne bacteria will not get you clear. Bacteria is a secondary symptom of the actual cause of acne. You need to use products that prevent the microcomedone (the beginning of acne) from forming in the first place. Products with ingredients like mandelic, vitamin a propionate coupled with the correct use of benzoyl peroxide do this beautifully.
#2. Utilize an acne specialist who can coach you in using the right products for your type of acne. Also, in how to use those products correctly. Skin will adapt to product use and will “get used” to those products. One needs to adjust the home care regimen to push the skin to clear, not just use the products the same way week in and week out. The best products in the world won’t get you clear unless you take skin adaptation into account.
#3. Lifestyle choices like staying away from foods high in iodides and androgen hormones will support the clearing of the skin. Foods like milk, cheese, salty foods, iodized salt, seaweed, organ meats, peanut butter can all make acne worse. Avoiding these foods however is not enough to get you clear. You still need the right products for your acne type and your skin type.
18. VERONICA MALIBU
#1. Using the right products is so important in preventing acne. I usually start everyone with a good cleanser, toner, micro-scrub, mask and moisturizer. My ‘Facial in a Bag’ was formulated for acne prone skin.
#2. Make sure your cosmetics and skin care don’t contain irritating oils. The most common offenders are isopropyl myristate, acetylated lanolin, and certain D and C red dyes.
#3. Isopropyl myristate is added to cosmetics and skin care products as an emulsifier. It goes into the pores and causes break-outs. Acetylated lanolin also goes into the pores and aggravates skin. D and C red dyes are coal tar derivatives.
These penetrate the pore and cause acne in the cheek area. If using makeup it is best to use a water based or pressed powder that does not contain these aggravating ingredients.
#4. Vitamin A gel (Retin-A) is my favorite treatment. You need to get a prescription from a dermatologist . The use of Retin-A causes the skin to peel, which releases the acne impactions. It also helps build collagen and keeps
the skin youthful. You have to be faithful to staying out of the sun when using Retin-A.
#5. Make sure you have a healthy diet. Also, you may not know it but you could have an allergy to some foods (dairy is a common one), which can spark acne problems. Reducing the amount of unhealthy foods like sodas, fried food and sugar will help fight acne. A healthy diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of water, and exercise will help with acne.
